My older brother joined the military, which made national security and veterans' issues feel a lot more personal to me. Having someone in your immediate family serve definitely changes how you look at certain political debates.

During the pandemic, I became especially interested in conversations about government authority and individual freedom. Like everyone else, I understood that COVID was a serious situation, but I also had concerns about how much control the government should have over people's personal decisions.
