‘Jeopardy!’ Champion Arrested on Multiple Child Exploitation Charges

A former two-time winner of the popular television quiz show *Jeopardy!* has been arrested in North Carolina on multiple child exploitation charges, marking his second criminal case in less than a year. Philip Joseph “Joey” DeSena, 44, was taken into custody Friday, October 23, after authorities allegedly discovered sexually explicit images and videos involving minors.
According to court documents cited by WBTV, DeSena faces 10 counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor in Wake County. The latest allegations surfaced while the former game show contestant was serving probation for an unrelated case involving the unlawful recording of a woman in private settings.

A judge denied DeSena bond during a court proceeding Monday, October 26. Jail records indicate that he remains in custody at the Wake County Jail as the new criminal case moves forward.
The charges represent another serious legal development for the Raleigh resident, who attracted national attention in 2024 through his successful appearances on the long-running television program.
Authorities allege that DeSena possessed sexually explicit photographs and videos depicting children. Details of the evidence were outlined in an arrest warrant obtained by local television station WBTV.
Under North Carolina law, second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor generally involves knowingly possessing visual material depicting a minor engaged in sexual activity. Prosecutors must establish the required elements of the offense to obtain a conviction.
The investigation comes approximately 10 months after DeSena was arrested in December 2025 in connection with a separate incident involving allegations of secretly recording a woman.
In that earlier case, investigators accused him of making unauthorized recordings of a female victim inside a bedroom and bathroom, locations where individuals have a reasonable expectation of privacy.
DeSena subsequently pleaded guilty to two felony peeping charges on July 27, 2026, resolving the earlier criminal prosecution.
The court sentenced him to 60 months of probation, equivalent to five years of supervision, rather than imposing an immediate prison term.
As part of his sentence, DeSena was also required to perform 100 hours of community service and undergo a mental health evaluation.
His latest arrest occurred only a few months after that guilty plea, raising additional questions about his legal circumstances while serving probation.
Before his criminal cases attracted attention, DeSena was known to television audiences for his appearances on *Jeopardy!*, the syndicated trivia competition hosted by Ken Jennings.
A development engineer from Raleigh, DeSena first appeared on the program in November 2024 and quickly established himself as a successful contestant.
He won two consecutive games, collecting a combined $44,698 in prize money during his initial run on the show.
Following his victories, DeSena described the experience as a “literal dream come true” and expressed appreciation for the production staff and fellow contestants who participated in the competition.
His performance earned him another opportunity to compete in January 2025, when he returned for the show’s Champions Wildcard tournament. He advanced to the semifinals before being eliminated from the competition.
DeSena now faces a new criminal prosecution involving 10 felony counts. Although he previously pleaded guilty in the separate peeping case, the child exploitation allegations remain pending, and he is presumed innocent of those charges unless proven guilty in court.
