WNBA Coach Faces Major Backlash After Flagrant Foul on Sophie Cunningham

Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White faced intense scrutiny this week after claiming she did not witness a flagrant foul committed against her own player during a recent game. Sophie Cunningham was clotheslined by Chicago Sky forward DiJonai Carrington in a play that officials ruled a flagrant foul.

White later told reporters she “didn’t see the play in real time.” Video and still images captured from the sideline, however, appear to show the coach looking directly toward the action as the contact occurred.

In a subsequent press conference, White defended Carrington’s intent, insisting the Sky forward did not deliberately target Cunningham’s neck. She also pushed back against online criticism that she had failed to support her players.

“For those who have anything to say about the play in the last game, I didn’t see the play in real time,” White stated. She went on to describe her leadership approach: “The reality is, with me, I will always lead with love. I will always lead with grace, I will always lead with humility, and I will always lead with integrity.”

White continued, saying the “hate, the fearmongering, the divisiveness” would not succeed and that “when they go low, we go high.” She closed the remarks by declaring that “everybody else can go to hell” before leaving the podium without taking questions.

The episode has reignited broader discussion about how the Fever organization has responded to physical play directed at players including Cunningham and Caitlin Clark. Some observers noted White’s relatively muted public reactions to earlier incidents involving her roster.

White has maintained that she stands by her players and will continue to prioritize unity within the team. The contrasting accounts of what she observed on the court, however, have kept the conversation active among fans and analysts.
