Trump Announces Historic Greenland Deal

President Donald Trump announced Friday that the United States, Denmark and Greenland have reached an agreement that would significantly expand America’s long-term military role in Greenland.

The arrangement would give the United States permanent access, basing and overflight rights in the Arctic territory while allowing Washington to expand its military presence when needed.

Trump celebrated the development in a Truth Social post, saying the agreement addresses longstanding American security concerns in the region.

“I am pleased to announce that the United States of America has entered into an Agreement with The Kingdom of Denmark, and Greenland,” Trump wrote.

Trump said the arrangement would allow the United States to take necessary security measures in Greenland indefinitely, calling it an “Infinite Life” agreement with “no end.”

The president also said the United States would begin developing a larger military presence in Greenland while working alongside local officials and residents.

Under the agreement, China, Russia and other non-NATO countries would be prevented from establishing military installations or maintaining troops in Greenland. Sensitive investments involving areas such as telecommunications, ports, undersea cables and critical minerals would also face restrictions.

The arrangement could also play a role in future American missile-defense operations, including infrastructure connected to the Golden Dome defense system. The United States already operates Pituffik Space Base in Greenland under a defense framework dating to 1951.

Importantly, the agreement does not transfer sovereignty over Greenland to the United States. Greenland remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and Danish officials have emphasized that the deal recognizes both territorial integrity and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.

Denmark’s government described the arrangement Friday as an expected agreement that the three governments plan to formally sign during the United Nations General Assembly next week. It would then need to complete the required parliamentary procedures before taking effect.

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the agreement would strengthen security for Greenland, Denmark, the United States and the broader Western alliance.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen similarly said the arrangement would improve security in the Arctic and North Atlantic while respecting the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland’s right to determine its own future.

Trump portrayed the agreement as the culmination of a push that had generated months of tension between Washington and Copenhagen over Greenland’s strategic importance.

“For over 100 years, Presidents have known the strategic importance of Greenland,” Trump wrote, adding that he was proud to have reached a lasting arrangement.

The agreement substantially strengthens America’s security position in the Arctic without formally placing Greenland under U.S. sovereignty.
