Chaos Erupts As Border Patrol Raids Leftist ‘Autonomous Zone’

Border Patrol agents cleared portions of a leftist encampment known as the Lochiel Autonomous Zone along a remote stretch of the Arizona-Mexico border on October 4.
The site occupied land on the Roosevelt Reservation, a federal strip in the San Rafael Valley near Lochiel, Arizona.
Roughly 100 activists, including environmental protesters and members of anarchist groups such as CrimethInc., had established the zone.
It began as a protest over the removal of three cottonwood trees on July 27 and grew into an effort to obstruct construction of a double-layer border wall.
The encampment included security checkpoints, supply networks, occupied buildings, dozens of tents, more than 50 vehicles, and had raised nearly $75,000.
Activists argued that wall construction threatened wildlife corridors and the local ecosystem.
They published plans to stop the project and encouraged supporters to relocate with open-ended commitments.
Agents arrived around 6:30 a.m. to clear areas near construction equipment and allow work to resume.
Protesters who refused to leave the federal property were confronted.
Some were detained and released without charges onto neighboring private land; others faced arrest.
At least eight arrests were reported, with individuals transported to Nogales for processing.
Journalists from Turning Point USA’s Frontlines team, including Tayler Hansen and Brandon Drey, documented the operation but encountered hostility.
Activists ripped recording glasses off Drey, and the crew faced repeated threats, harassment, and vandalism, including slashed tires on their rental vehicle.
One activist warned a reporter, “You’re going to be real easy to find.”
Another later mocked the tire damage.
The crew became stranded near the site while waiting for a tow truck that itself suffered a flat tire.
One activist shouted at officers, “This is not Afghanistan, brother. This is Tucson. This is Lochiel.”
Border Patrol cleared enough of the area for construction to resume.
The operation resulted in detentions, arrests, property damage, and assaults on the documenting crew.
