Trump Admin Asks Kimberly Guilfoyle to Resign Amid Growing Controversy

President Donald Trump’s administration has requested the resignation of Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece and former Fox News personality, following allegations involving her financial dealings and conduct. The announcement came during the first official White House press briefing led by newly appointed press secretary Katie Zacharia, marking a significant development involving one of Trump’s longtime political allies.

Guilfoyle, who was previously engaged to Donald Trump Jr., has faced mounting scrutiny following reports that she allegedly sought $100,000 from a Republican donor to address personal credit card debt before her Senate confirmation. The controversy raised questions about whether she attempted to exchange political access or influence for financial assistance, accusations her legal representatives have disputed. Trump’s decision to seek her departure follows several days of public attention surrounding the allegations.

“We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign. She has been a wonderful asset to the team and we wish her well,” Zacharia announced from the White House podium.

The statement confirmed that the administration had moved beyond simply reviewing Guilfoyle’s position and had formally requested that she leave her diplomatic assignment.

Trump had indicated Monday that Guilfoyle’s future was uncertain, telling reporters that his administration was considering removing her from the position following the reports about her conduct.

“Well, we’re looking at it,” Trump said when questioned about the possibility of dismissing Guilfoyle. “We’re not happy.”

The controversy intensified after The Wall Street Journal published allegations involving Guilfoyle and businessman Eric Deters, a Republican donor who reportedly maintained contact with her before she became ambassador.

According to the reporting, Guilfoyle allegedly requested assistance paying a $100,000 American Express bill in July 2025, shortly before appearing before lawmakers for her Senate confirmation hearing.

Deters subsequently alleged that Guilfoyle had offered to help him gain access to influential administration officials while seeking financial assistance. He characterized the arrangement as inappropriate.

Guilfoyle’s attorneys have challenged the allegations, disputing the authenticity of certain communications and maintaining that money she sought was connected to legitimate speaking engagements and consulting services.

Her legal representatives have also denied allegations involving improper gifts and travel arrangements, arguing that she followed applicable State Department ethics requirements.

The controversy has attracted additional attention because of Guilfoyle’s longstanding relationship with the Trump family. Beyond her former engagement to Donald Trump Jr., she was a prominent supporter of Trump’s presidential campaigns and an influential conservative media personality.

Before entering diplomacy, Guilfoyle worked as a prosecutor and became nationally recognized through her television career, including her years at Fox News. Her appointment to Greece placed her in an important diplomatic position involving a longtime American ally.

The situation also created an unexpected moment for Zacharia, who officially became White House press secretary Monday after Trump announced her selection the previous Friday.

Zacharia replaced Karoline Leavitt, who departed the administration in August. Before assuming her new role, Zacharia worked as a communications adviser for Trump Media & Technology Group and previously held a spokesperson position at the Department of Homeland Security.

During her introductory remarks Tuesday, Zacharia expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve the president, explaining that she had wanted to work alongside Trump “for a long time.”

“I’m thrilled to officially be a part of this incredible journey together,” Zacharia said while addressing reporters. She also highlighted Trump’s recent rally in Youngstown, Ohio, and promoted the administration’s economic agenda ahead of November’s midterm elections.

The announcement regarding Guilfoyle ultimately overshadowed Zacharia’s introduction. With the administration seeking Guilfoyle’s departure and allegations surrounding her conduct receiving continued attention, the White House faces questions about the future of its diplomatic representation in Greece and whether additional action will follow.
