Country Legend Willie Nelson Shocks Fans with Democratic Endorsement

Country music icon Willie Nelson has endorsed Democrat James Talarico in the Texas Senate race, an announcement that surprised portions of his fan base.

In a video supplied to the Houston Chronicle, the 93-year-old Nelson, wearing his familiar red bandana, said, “Hi, this is Willie Nelson. I’ve gotten to know James Talarico. He’s a good man and will be a good senator for the state of Texas. Please vote — and vote for James Talarico.”

The endorsement arrives as Democrats pursue a difficult Senate victory in a state that has long favored Republicans.

Nelson has a record of supporting Democratic candidates and liberal causes; he previously endorsed Gina Hinojosa for governor and Vikki Goodwin for lieutenant governor.

Talarico appeared onstage with Nelson at the singer’s Fourth of July Picnic in Austin earlier this year.

Other Texas musicians have also backed Democratic contenders in the state, including The Chicks, who promoted Talarico on social media while wearing “I’m a Talafreako” shirts, and Don Henley, who has contributed financially through a super PAC.

The contest pits Talarico against Republican Ken Paxton and has attracted national attention, substantial outside spending, and appearances by President Donald Trump on behalf of Paxton.

Nelson’s support coincides with the launch of a Rural Texans for Talarico effort focused on expanding internet access, recruiting health-care workers, and addressing the local effects of data centers.

As a cultural figure with a wide following that spans political lines, Nelson’s statement supplies additional name recognition to the Democratic campaign in a high-profile race.
