Ilhan Omar’s Family Subpoenaed by DOJ Amid Federal Investigation

Federal investigators have subpoenaed relatives of Rep. Ilhan Omar as part of an expanding criminal investigation involving the Minnesota Democrat. The Justice Department’s latest action follows a search of the congresswoman’s Washington-area residence by federal agents, marking another significant development in a case that has intensified scrutiny of Omar and her personal history.

According to Bloomberg News, the subpoenas were issued as investigators examine matters that include Omar’s immigration background. A person familiar with the investigation confirmed the development but spoke anonymously because the inquiry remains active. Authorities have not publicly identified which relatives received subpoenas or explained exactly what information investigators hope to obtain.

The subpoenas came shortly after Homeland Security Investigations agents searched Omar’s home on Monday, October 12. The search and subsequent subpoenas have raised questions about the scope of the federal investigation and whether prosecutors are seeking documents, testimony, or other evidence involving the congresswoman’s family.

The Justice Department has not publicly disclosed the specific allegations under examination. Federal officials also have not announced criminal charges against Omar, and the issuance of subpoenas does not establish that the recipients are suspected of wrongdoing.

Omar, who represents a Minneapolis-area congressional district, has consistently rejected accusations of misconduct. She maintains that allegations involving her personal history are unfounded and politically motivated.

The investigation comes amid longstanding tensions between Omar and President Donald Trump. The Minnesota congresswoman has frequently criticized Trump’s administration, while the president has repeatedly targeted her in public remarks.

Omar’s office responded forcefully following the search of her residence, accusing the administration of improperly using federal investigative powers against a political opponent.

Jacklyn Rogers, Omar’s communications director, described the operation as a “raid by Trump’s DHS” in a statement released Monday.

Rogers called the search “an outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target political enemies.”

The statement reflects Omar’s position that the investigation is politically motivated. Federal authorities, however, have not publicly provided enough information about the evidence underlying the investigation to independently assess those accusations.

Omar’s immigration history has become part of the inquiry, according to the person familiar with the investigation. She was born in Somalia and left the country during its civil war.

At approximately eight years old, Omar fled with her family and eventually spent four years in a refugee camp in neighboring Kenya.

She arrived in the United States in 1995 and later settled in Minneapolis in 1997, where she became involved in community organizations and politics.

Omar subsequently entered public office and became one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress in 2018, alongside Michigan Democrat Rashida Tlaib.

Her political career has brought national attention, particularly because of her outspoken positions on immigration, foreign policy, and the Trump administration.

The latest subpoenas suggest investigators are continuing to gather information beyond the search of Omar’s residence. However, the identities of those subpoenaed and the materials requested remain undisclosed.

For now, the investigation remains unresolved. Omar continues to deny wrongdoing, while federal prosecutors have yet to publicly explain whether their inquiry will result in criminal charges.

The investigation has also drawn attention because of its timing, just weeks before the November midterm elections. Critics argue that investigative actions involving political candidates close to an election can undermine public confidence, while Justice Department officials maintain that the search followed appropriate legal procedures.
