Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) delivered a charged statement during a House hearing on the Smithsonian, asserting that President Trump and the broader MAGA movement are driven by a specific fear.

Addressing Yale historian David Blight, Pressley declared: “Fascist attacks on museums are not just about history. Today, the occupant of the White House labels entire aspects of American history as ‘divisive’ and uses the power of his office to pressure the Smithsonian to remove, whitewash, and to rewrite our stories.”

She continued, “I’m not here to exaggerate, just to educate. And what is spurring this all on? What fuels this? Fear of a black planet. Fear of a multi-racial democracy.”

Pressley then tied the claim directly to the current administration: “The occupant of the Oval Office, Project 2025, this cult of MAGA, they are fueled by fear and hate.”

The remarks came amid Republican scrutiny of Smithsonian exhibits and materials that critics describe as ideologically driven. Pressley had earlier labeled the Trump administration “synonymous with fascism” and compared its cultural approach to historical authoritarian efforts to control institutions.

Blight responded by stressing the importance of defending cultural institutions, noting that people lose them if they fail to stand up. The exchange quickly spread online, with supporters praising Pressley’s candor and critics calling the “black planet” framing inflammatory and detached from policy debates over historical presentation.
