AOC Will Decide on Presidential Run After Midterms: ‘I Am Not Opposed’

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is leaving open the possibility of seeking the White House in 2028 as she considers the next phase of her political career. The New York Democrat discussed her future during a recent interview, saying she expects to weigh her options after the November midterm elections. Recent reporting has likewise described her as keeping several possible paths open.

Those options include seeking another term in the House, pursuing a U.S. Senate seat or launching a presidential campaign. Ocasio-Cortez has represented portions of the Bronx and Queens since entering Congress in January 2019. Her official House biography notes that she first won the seat after defeating longtime Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley in the 2018 primary.

When discussing the timing of a possible presidential campaign, Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged that political opportunities do not necessarily remain available indefinitely.

“There’s an argument that some make that this is a very unique political window,” she said, adding that in politics “you do only get one shot.”

She also said that major opportunities sometimes arrive before a person feels entirely prepared for them.

“Life doesn’t wait for you to be ready for things,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Sometimes life just makes things ready for you.” Her comments represent a notable shift from simply dismissing questions about 2028, though she has not announced a presidential campaign.

Earlier in 2026, Ocasio-Cortez said her immediate political focus was helping Democrats in the midterm elections and suggested that decisions about her own future would come afterward.

The congresswoman said personal considerations will also factor into whatever decision she ultimately makes, including her age and how a major campaign could affect her life.

She also raised questions surrounding race, gender and perceptions of electability. Ocasio-Cortez said those considerations are among the realities she weighs when thinking about a potential campaign.

“I think about it personally,” she said while discussing her future. She added that she does not “shy away” from conversations surrounding electability.

A Senate campaign is another possibility. The seat currently held by Sen. Chuck Schumer is among the offices mentioned as Ocasio-Cortez considers what she could do in 2028. Asked about how other politicians might affect that decision, Ocasio-Cortez indicated she would make her choice independently.

“I don’t think that my decisions would come down to deference,” she said. She described a presidential bid as carrying particularly significant consequences for her political future, suggesting that losing such a race could mark the end of her time as a candidate for elected office.

“If I were to run in this cycle, and not win, I would be done,” Ocasio-Cortez said. She added that the possibility would not necessarily stop her from running.

Ocasio-Cortez has developed a national political profile since arriving in Congress, becoming closely associated with progressive priorities including Medicare for All, labor protections, climate policy and expanded government healthcare programs. Her congressional office continues to list healthcare, workers’ issues, housing and climate policy among her major areas of focus.

In recent months, she has also remained active legislatively, including working on healthcare affordability initiatives and co-leading legislation aimed at restricting corporate ownership of physician practices.
