Undercover Video Catches Abdul El-Sayed’s Sister Confirming the Worst

Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed has told voters he is a capitalist who wants stronger rules against monopolies. An undercover clip featuring his sister cuts against that line.
The recording comes from the Socialism 2026 Conference in Chicago. University of Chicago professor Eman Abdelhadi identified herself as El-Sayed’s sister while talking with an attendee. The Midwesterner obtained the video.
The attendee described a nephew who had grown uneasy after hearing El-Sayed call himself a capitalist. “Don’t worry about that,” the attendee said. “Abdul is not a f***ing capitalist.”
Abdelhadi answered, “Yeah. All we care about is the policies at this point.” When the attendee said the goal was “getting him in,” she replied, “Exactly.”
El-Sayed has rejected the socialist label in public. “I’m not a socialist, I’m just a capitalist who understands how capitalism works,” he told WJBK in July. He said his fight is with monopolies and that more regulation is how he defines capitalism.
His platform includes Medicare for All, abolishing ICE, and tighter control of large companies. He has headlined Democratic Socialists of America events, including a 2019 Detroit fundraiser where organizers called him a longtime friend of the chapter. He has also appeared with left-wing streamer Hasan Piker.
Abdelhadi’s own record is further left. She has written about leaving “capitalism to a stateless, communized society,” called for abolishing the police, and faces felony charges after an anti-ICE protest. She has posted support for her brother’s campaign.
The Midwesterner report landed days after El-Sayed again described himself as a far-left candidate presenting a more moderate face for a general election. Critics say the sister’s comments match that strategy: win first, argue about labels later.
El-Sayed’s campaign has not treated the clip as a change in his public message. The video does not quote him at the conference. It quotes a sibling who said the priority was the policies and the seat.
