Trump’s Endorsements Just Delivered a Night of Results No One in Arizona Saw Coming

President Trump’s influence was on full display in Arizona’s primary elections Tuesday as his endorsed candidates swept key Republican contests.

Rep. Andy Biggs, a former House Freedom Caucus chairman, easily won the GOP nomination for governor, defeating Rep. David Schweikert and others by more than 50 points. The victory sets up a general-election matchup against Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, who ran unopposed for renomination.

Former NFL kicker Jay Feely, who received Trump’s “complete and total endorsement,” captured the Republican nomination in the competitive 1st Congressional District. Former Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb also prevailed in the 5th District, the seat Biggs is vacating.

On the Democratic side, Rep. Greg Stanton held off a progressive primary challenge from Kai Newkirk in the 4th District, avoiding a potentially polarizing left-wing nominee in a battleground seat.

The results reinforced Trump’s continued grip on the Arizona Republican Party while giving establishment Democrats a modest sigh of relief in one contested race.
