Taylor Sheridan Is Returning to the Big Screen After Five Years — and the Projects Could Not Be More Different

Taylor Sheridan, the creative force behind Yellowstone and its expanding universe, is preparing his first feature films in five years under a new deal with NBCUniversal.

Sheridan signed a massive agreement with the studio last year and will leave Paramount after his current deal expires in 2028. The move allows him to step away from intensive television writing and return to movies. He previously wrote Sicario and the Academy Award-nominated Hell or High Water. His last film credits came in 2021 with Those Who Wish Me Dead and Without Remorse.

Two new projects are based on concepts from The Brutalist producer Andrew Lauren, who has collaborated with Sheridan before. “These two projects have been years in the making — ideas I believed in deeply, never anticipating that advances in science and shifts in the political landscape would accelerate their path to realization,” Lauren said.

“Visalia” is described as a political drama following a determined young Cuban woman who escapes her homeland, braving danger in pursuit of freedom in America, only to confront an uncertain future when a historic political shift pulls her back.

“Capture the Flag” will send Sheridan into space. It follows a NASA engineer in a desperate race to build the first reusable spacecraft capable of traveling to the moon and back, testing his limits when a tech tycoon offers the chance to make history — at a price.

Release dates and further casting details have not been announced. The projects mark a significant expansion beyond Sheridan’s Western and crime-drama television success.
