Protests Erupt After ICE Shooting in Austin

Protests broke out in North Austin on Sunday after an ICE officer shot and wounded a Venezuelan man officials described as being in the country illegally.

DHS confirmed the shooting. Police Chief Lisa Davis and EMS officials said the man was in serious but stable condition at a trauma center.

Davis said early information pointed to a short foot pursuit after the man fled, adding that ICE had not confirmed that account and that facts were preliminary.

Bystander video appeared to show an ICE vehicle nose-to-nose with a blue sedan. An officer approached the passenger side and shots were heard. The driver tried to pull away, then stopped.

A second clip showed the officer walking back toward the damaged sedan and appearing to call for help. The car had heavy passenger-side damage and what looked like two holes in the rear passenger window.

Councilman Mike Siefel claimed the officer fired five times through the windshield. The police chief said that account was false.

A crowd gathered, then grew. Water bottles were thrown. DPS troopers put on gas masks and used pepper spray. Austin officers lined up nearby.

Officials said an immigration judge had issued a final removal order against the man and had not released his name. The FBI, Texas Rangers, and ICE were expected to investigate. It was unclear whether the officer wore a body camera.
