Sophie Cunningham Drama Takes Bizarre New Turn Amid Reddit Ban

Sophie Cunningham is one of the most discussed players in the WNBA. On the league’s largest Reddit community, talking about why she is discussed can get you filtered.
Reports over the weekend said /r/WNBA was restricting posts tied to Cunningham’s views on men in women’s sports. A moderator’s explanation was not subtle. “We filter content based on Sophi [sic] because it tends to being [sic] out trolls and people that arent[sic] fans of the W,” the mod wrote. “If you want to post freely aout [sic] Sophie you can go to a different sub.”
The board later said Cunningham content must stay “related to basketball, including games, highlights, interviews, statistics, marketing endorsements, and other WNBA-related news.” In practice, that means her most famous comments are treated as off-topic.
#Fever guard Sophie Cunningham on her trans comments in ESPN:
“I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense. … I think it’s really important to protect children.”
“I don’t dislike anyone. … I’m there to love, but I’m also there to love biological women. …” pic.twitter.com/3OrIqoVYrk

Those comments were not complicated. After backlash, Cunningham told ESPN she never said she hated transgender people. “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest,” she said. “And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
When pressed again, she did not walk it back. “I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense. … I think it’s really important to protect children.”
The subreddit still hosts political talk when it runs the other direction. Critics say that is the point. Cunningham’s position is popular with the public and toxic with a slice of the league’s online base. Moderators chose the base.

Cunningham is not a fringe player. She is a starter on a title-contending Fever team that also features Caitlin Clark. The attempt to wall off her views only made the views louder.
The league already has a credibility problem on sex and sport. Its loudest fan forum just made it worse.
