Michelle Obama Rips Her Kids During Jon Stewart Interview: ‘I Don’t Miss Them’

Former first lady Michelle Obama gave a blunt account of empty-nest life on her podcast “IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson”.

Speaking with Jon Stewart and her brother, she said life felt refreshing after Malia, 28, and Sasha, 25, no longer lived at home.

Stewart, also an empty nester, talked about enjoying being “just the two of you” again while still missing “the energy and excitement of the kids being around.” Obama’s answer was immediate. “I don’t miss em’,” she said.

She added quickly, “I don’t. I love them. I’m going to see them tonight for dinner. I love them.”

She then contrasted her reaction with her husband’s when the girls left for college. “Barack cried when they went to college and I was like, ‘Bye, goodbye.’”

The practical change, she said, was the end of weekend worry. “Now, Friday nights aren’t wrecked with terror and fear about, ‘Where are you, where are you?’”

Stewart said the daily work of parenting had given his life “meaning and a pattern.” Obama shook her head. “I’m good,” she said, gesturing around the studio. “Look at all this meaning I have.”

“I have a wonderful pattern. I love my schedule; I have a great schedule and it’s all mine,” she continued. She also said fathers can feel the absence more because “you weren’t there from 6:00 to 9:00 at night, you missed a lot of it.”

Malia and Sasha have stayed mostly private since leaving the White House. They previously shared an apartment in Los Angeles and appeared with their parents at the June 2026 opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. Obama has said she remains close to both and still sees them often.

The comments set off a familiar argument about motherhood, public candor, and how political families talk about home life. What she described as relief, critics treated as a dismissal. She insisted both things can be true: she loves her daughters, and she does not miss the years when they still lived under her roof.
