First lady Melania Trump skipped a ballgown for Thursday night’s White House state dinner honoring Chinese President Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan. She wore a white Saint Laurent cotton poplin blouse with an oversized bow, black Dolce & Gabbana floral brocade trousers cut in a cigarette silhouette, and a black silk satin Dolce & Gabbana cummerbund.

The blouse retails for about $2,300. The trousers are listed near $1,945. The cummerbund is about $795. She finished the look with limited-edition Christian Louboutin black velour Pigalle Follies pumps, the same shoes she had worn earlier that day with an Alexander McQueen suit at the arrival ceremony.

The dinner was held in the East Room. Guests included figures from technology and finance. Peng Liyuan wore a deep red gown. The first lady’s black-and-white tailoring stood apart from classic state-dinner tulle.

The brocade carried a peony motif. In Chinese tradition the peony is called the king of flowers, a detail several fashion writers read as a quiet nod to the visiting couple.
