DHS Chief Makes Explosive Ilhan Omar Marriage Claim

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin says federal investigators are examining long-running allegations surrounding Rep. Ilhan Omar’s immigration history and could pursue action if evidence of wrongdoing is uncovered.

Mullin addressed the issue during an appearance with conservative commentator Benny Johnson at the 2026 Republican Midterm Convention.

Johnson asked what could happen as authorities review claims involving Omar’s former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, whom critics have alleged was her biological brother.

“Something’s going to happen,” Mullin said.

Mullin then made the allegation directly, saying, “We know that she married her brother to try to bring him into the United States.”

The accusation has circulated for years but has not been publicly proven. Omar has repeatedly denied that Elmi is her brother and has rejected claims that the marriage was connected to immigration fraud.

Mullin suggested the federal review extends beyond the marriage allegation and could examine how members of Omar’s family entered the United States.

“There may be more to this — the whole family migration and possibly some illegal activity for them to come to the United States to begin with. But all of this, we’re investigating.”

Mullin stressed that any potential case would have to be based on evidence rather than political considerations.

“If we actually move a case forward, it’s not a political case. It’s actually a case because they did things wrong.”

He also argued that alleged immigration fraud could carry consequences even years later if investigators establish that false information was knowingly provided to federal authorities.

“If you decided to break the law or lie on the information you gave the United States … but you didn’t tell us who you actually were … there’s no expiration to that,” Mullin said. “If we can prove it that you shouldn’t have been here in the first place, we’ll deport you.”

Omar has strongly denied the underlying accusation. In 2020, she called the claims “absolutely false and ridiculous,” adding that “insinuations that Ahmed Nur Said Elmi is my brother are absurd and offensive.”

Vice President JD Vance has also publicly discussed the matter, saying federal authorities were examining whether there was any basis for an immigration fraud case.

“It certainly seems like something fishy is there, but everybody’s entitled to equal justice under the laws, so we’re going to investigate it,” Vance said. “We’re going to take a look at it. If we think that there’s a crime, we’re going to prosecute that crime.”

President Donald Trump has likewise repeatedly raised the allegation, saying, “If that’s true, she shouldn’t be a congressman. And we should throw her the hell out of our country.”

Despite the renewed scrutiny and public comments from administration officials, no criminal charges connected to the marriage allegation have been publicly announced.

For now, Mullin’s remarks indicate federal officials are continuing to review the accusations and have not ruled out further action if investigators determine there is sufficient evidence of a violation.
