George Clooney Issues Political Warning to ‘People in Charge’ — Without Naming Them

George Clooney used a lifetime-achievement podium in Venice to warn that powerful people are “telling us to fear one another,” a speech that sounded political even as it avoided naming a president, a party, or a policy.

The actor accepted the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival and pivoted from career memories to the present. “We’re living through a moment in time where the people in charge and people with the most money are telling us to fear one another,” he said. “But we know better than that, don’t we? Because history does teach us a lesson.”

He then reached for the language of repression. “The first people that authoritarians try to shut down are not politicians. They’re journalists who ask questions, they’re the artists who refuse simple answers, the filmmakers, writers, actors and musicians who insist that someone you never met is deserving of your empathy.”

The refrain he wanted repeated was this: “Stories are always dangerous to people who peddle in fear.” And: “The people who are afraid of books and music and stories are never the heroes in history.”

Clooney conceded the limits of his industry. Movies, he said, “don’t stop wars, they don’t lower inflation, they don’t fix elections.” What they do, he argued, is remind audiences “that a stranger is never stranger, and that he might just be the hero in somebody else’s story.”

If people can “still sit together in the dark and care about people we’ve never met,” he concluded, “I think we’ll be okay.”

Before the speech, he used a press conference to defend Mark Ruffalo after Ruffalo’s remarks about Paramount’s David and Larry Ellison. “I support Mark Ruffalo’s ability to speak freely,” Clooney said.

He also offered a sharper political aside. “I think maybe we have a kakistocracy right now, but we’ll get through it,” he said, pointing to the November midterms as a “check and balance” and 2028 as a hoped-for “restoration of some normalcy.”

Conservatives will hear a familiar Hollywood sermon: artists as the last line against authoritarians, delivered from a European festival stage, with the current administration left unnamed but not unidentified.

Clooney is free to give that speech. Voters are free to notice who usually gets lectured, and who never does.
