Nine U.S. Warplanes Hit in Missile Attack on Air Base

An Iranian ballistic missile strike on a major U.S. air base in Jordan damaged several American military aircraft, according to people familiar with the incident.

The attack targeted Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, a key location used by U.S. forces for air operations in the Middle East.

One A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft sustained significant damage to a wing during the strike.

Roughly eight F-15E Strike Eagle fighters also suffered minor damage.

Despite the damage, the F-15Es are reportedly still considered serviceable.

The Iranian attack came after U.S. forces struck five Iranian tankers earlier that day.

Iran responded by launching dozens of ballistic missiles toward the Jordanian installation.

American and Jordanian forces fired numerous interceptors in an effort to stop the incoming missiles.

U.S. officials said no American personnel were killed in the attack, although the strike did damage U.S. military equipment.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps later claimed that American aircraft at the base had been damaged.

Muwaffaq Salti Air Base has become an important hub for U.S. airpower during operations involving Iran, with dozens of American warplanes operating from the installation.

The base is located near Azraq, Jordan, and has reportedly been targeted repeatedly since the conflict began in February.

A previous missile attack on the installation in July killed three U.S. Army soldiers, underscoring the continuing threat facing American forces operating from the base.
