Trump Posts Map Renaming New Mexico to New America

President Donald Trump stirred debate after sharing a map on Truth Social that replaced the name “New Mexico” with “New America.” The image showed the word “Mexico” crossed out and “America” inserted in its place, suggesting a new name for the southwestern state. Trump has not signed an executive order changing New Mexico’s name.

Trump followed the map with another Truth Social post embracing the idea more explicitly. “Many people suggested changing the name of New Mexico, one of the great vote cheating states of all time, to NEW AMERICA. So much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible State. Wow, I Love It!!! President DONALD J. TRUMP,” he wrote.

The post follows other efforts by Trump to incorporate “America” into the federal government’s terminology for prominent geographic locations.

After returning to office in January 2025, Trump directed federal agencies to use the name Gulf of America for the body of water previously federally designated as the Gulf of Mexico. Trump later issued an executive order directing federal agencies to refer to Lake Ontario as Lake America.

His latest suggestion involving New Mexico quickly drew responses from Democratic leaders in the state.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham rejected the idea, writing, “New Mexico’s name isn’t up for debate — it’s been ours since before the United States existed.”

She continued, “While the President tries to distract Americans from his disastrous war in Iran, the price of gas —and everything else — keeps rising. Under Democratic leadership here in New Mexico, we’re providing families with free childcare and college, protecting access to health care and investing in housing. While the White House wastes time coloring on maps, Nuevo México is busy doing the work.”

Former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, who is running for governor of New Mexico, also pushed back against the suggestion.

“You can’t be serious. New Mexico is not for renaming. Not up for sale. My promise: I’ll always stand up for what makes New Mexico, New Mexico,” Haaland wrote.

New Mexico became the 47th state admitted to the Union in 1912. For now, “New America” remains an idea rather than an official change to the state’s name.
