ESPN Cuts Analyst Mid-Broadcast as Broader Layoffs Hit Sports Networks

ESPN dismissed longtime analyst Ryan Clark during a live appearance on “NFL Live” on Monday, one of several high-profile cuts tied to restructuring after the network’s acquisition of NFL Network assets.

Clark had been discussing the New York Giants before a commercial break and did not return. Network executives had planned to notify him the following day as part of larger workforce reductions but moved faster after media questions raised the risk he would learn of the decision online first.

The former Super Bowl champion had been with ESPN since 2015 and signed a multi-year deal in 2024. Sources pointed to both cost pressures and past on-air friction, including a September exchange in which he told colleague Peter Schrager, “That’s the non-player in you.”

Clark later apologized for the remark. After the firing he posted a message of solidarity with other employees affected by the cuts, writing that he hoped new doors would open for those who had invested their careers in the company.

ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro told staff in a memo that difficult decisions were necessary after evaluating teams and resources following the NFL asset integration, while promising support for those impacted.
