Ilhan Omar’s ‘Brother-Husband’ Says He’s Gay in Shocking Twist

Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) former husband has publicly identified himself as gay, bringing renewed attention to the Minnesota congresswoman’s controversial marriage history. Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, who married Omar in 2009, disclosed his sexual orientation in an academic publication, according to a report from TMZ.

The revelation comes as Omar faces renewed scrutiny over allegations that her marriage to Elmi, a British citizen, was arranged to obtain immigration benefits. Critics have also alleged that Elmi is Omar’s biological brother, an accusation that has circulated for years but has never been conclusively substantiated. Omar has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.

Elmi, now a doctoral researcher at the University of Bristol in England, reportedly disclosed his sexual orientation in an academic paper published in August. The research examined violence against LGBTQ individuals in Kenya and explored how his personal background shaped his work.

The paper, titled “Out in the Field: Notes on Researching Queer Violence in Kenya,” included a direct reference to Elmi’s identity and experiences as a researcher.

“As a gay man of the East African diaspora, my fieldwork was never neutral,” Elmi wrote.

The disclosure represents an unusual public statement from Elmi, who has largely remained outside the spotlight despite the political controversy surrounding his former marriage.

Although his sexual orientation does not establish that the marriage was fraudulent, the revelation has prompted renewed discussion about the circumstances of his relationship with Omar.

Omar legally married Elmi in 2009 after previously maintaining a relationship with Ahmed Hirsi, with whom she shares children. Elmi reportedly left Minnesota in 2012, although their divorce was not finalized until 2017.

Political opponents have repeatedly questioned whether Omar’s marriage to Elmi was legitimate or whether it was intended to facilitate his immigration status in the United States.

According to previous reporting by the New York Post, an acquaintance of Hirsi alleged that Hirsi had privately described Elmi as Omar’s brother from London.

The same individual claimed the marriage was arranged for immigration purposes while Omar maintained a separate relationship with Hirsi under Islamic law. Those allegations remain unverified.

The controversy has also attracted federal attention. According to reports cited by TMZ, investigators previously examined potential immigration violations connected to Omar’s marriage history.

The earlier investigation reportedly encountered legal obstacles involving the applicable statute of limitations, limiting the possibility of pursuing certain potential charges.

However, the existence of an investigation does not demonstrate criminal wrongdoing. No court has established that Omar married her brother or entered into a fraudulent marriage.

Omar has consistently rejected the accusations. During an October appearance on MS NOW, she was questioned about whether Elmi could be related to her.

“Not to my knowledge,” Omar responded.

Her answer drew attention from critics seeking further clarification about her family history. Nevertheless, Elmi’s latest disclosure provides no independent evidence supporting allegations of immigration fraud or a familial relationship between the former spouses.

The central allegations remain unresolved. While Elmi’s academic paper offers new information about his personal identity, it does not establish that his marriage to Omar was fraudulent. The congresswoman has not been found guilty of any crime related to the allegations, and the latest revelation alone does not change that legal reality.
