Trump Snaps at CNN Reporter in Oval Office — Then It Escalates

President Donald Trump repeatedly ordered CNN senior White House correspondent Kristen Holmes to “be quiet” during a tense Oval Office exchange Monday after she interrupted him while a young guest stood nearby.

The confrontation unfolded as Trump responded to criticism from Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff, who had mocked the president’s relationship with aide Natalie Harp at a Georgia rally. Holmes pressed Trump on Ossoff’s claim that he would rather “build his ballroom and travel with Natalie” than do the job of president.

Trump ridiculed Ossoff as a “Pee Wee Herman lookalike” and defended White House renovations, saying “we’re fixing a White House that hasn’t been taken care of.” When Holmes tried to jump in with another question about South Korea before he finished, Trump erupted.

“Quiet. Quiet. Quiet!” he shouted. He then accused the reporter of being disrespectful in front of 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai, who was being recognized at the White House after being rescued from dangerous surf in California. “You’re very disrespectful in front of this young man,” Trump said. He later called Holmes “a loud, boisterous person. You’re fake news” while continuing to tell her to be quiet.

White House officials quickly rallied behind the president. The official Rapid Response 47 account declared, “Someday, your children will come across your disgusting and inhumane question. They will be sickened and embarrassed to have a parent be so callous and vindictive. It’s quite troubling.” Officials also branded Holmes “a disgraceful, humiliating embarrassment to her alleged profession.”

CNN issued a statement defending its reporter. Outgoing White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt appeared visibly irritated during the exchange. Holmes has worked at CNN for more than 14 years as a senior White House correspondent. The clash shifted attention from Harp—often described as Trump’s “human printer” for supplying him printed materials and traveling closely with him—to yet another high-profile confrontation between the president and the cable network.
