Two Quiet Gulf Allies Just Struck Inside Iran — and Almost No One Saw It Coming

Bahrain and Kuwait conducted airstrikes against targets inside Iran earlier this month, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing sources familiar with the operation.

The strikes marked the first known direct military actions by the two Gulf states against Iranian territory. Fighter jets from both countries targeted drone and missile storage depots and other military sites. The United Arab Emirates provided intelligence and defensive air cover.

Neither Bahrain nor Kuwait has publicly confirmed the strikes, and spokespeople did not respond to inquiries. Officials in both countries reportedly decided a response was necessary after weeks of Iranian attacks.

Iran has focused a concentration of its missile and drone assaults on Bahrain and Kuwait in recent weeks. Both nations host significant U.S. military facilities — the Navy’s Fifth Fleet is based in Bahrain, while Kuwait hosts thousands of American troops.

Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry reported that Iran struck a power-generation and water-desalination facility, calling it a dangerous escalation. Bahrain and Kuwait have repeatedly activated air defenses to intercept incoming Iranian projectiles, though large-scale casualties have not been reported.

The United Arab Emirates condemned the Iranian attacks on its neighbors and called for reduced tensions and the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The reported Gulf strikes occurred against the backdrop of intensified U.S. operations against Iranian targets.
