The Trump administration has launched a legal challenge involving more than 20,000 registered California voters suspected of lacking U.S. citizenship, raising concerns about election security ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. Federal prosecutors sought an emergency court order requiring election officials to separate mail-in ballots associated with those individuals until their citizenship status could be verified. California officials disputed the allegations and resisted the federal government's request.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said federal investigators identified at least 20,000 individuals on California's voter rolls whom immigration authorities believe may be noncitizens. Prosecutors argued that allowing ballots associated with those registrations to enter the normal counting process could make it impossible to determine whether an ineligible ballot had been included in the final results. However, the government has not established that all 20,000 individuals are noncitizens or that they actually cast ballots.
