Trump Lands Massive Oil Deal with Russia

President Donald Trump announced a major energy agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin that commits Russia to release millions of tons of diesel into global markets as fuel prices rise for American farmers, truckers, and businesses.

Trump revealed the arrangement on Truth Social, stating that Russia would immediately begin supplying more than 300,000 tons of diesel to American and international markets.

Under the terms, Moscow is expected to deliver another 500,000 tons in November, followed by an additional 1 million tons shortly afterward.

The total could eventually reach another 3 million tons depending on the condition of Russian refineries, bringing proposed shipments to more than 4.8 million tons.

The deal arrives weeks before the November midterm elections as the administration seeks to ease an international diesel shortage fueled by conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Ukrainian forces have targeted Russian oil refineries, damaging infrastructure and prompting Moscow to restrict fuel exports.

Attacks on energy facilities in the Middle East by Iran and its Houthi allies have further strained supplies.

Diesel powers commercial trucking, agricultural machinery, and construction equipment, so price spikes raise costs throughout the supply chain, particularly in farm states such as Iowa.

The administration had already temporarily expanded access to tax-exempt dyed diesel and encouraged partners to release emergency reserves.

Friday’s agreement brings additional Russian fuel into the marketplace even as Washington maintains sanctions on Moscow’s energy sector.

Trump recently approved further sanctions targeting that sector, making the new shipments a notable shift in approach.

The actual effect on prices will depend on whether the promised volumes arrive and how quickly they reach consumers.

With Election Day approaching, the agreement focuses attention on whether the added supply can lower costs before voters cast ballots.
