Whistleblower Goes to FBI — Letitia James Faces New Trouble

New York Attorney General Letitia James is under fresh pressure after a lawyer from inside her office sat down with federal investigators and described an office culture aimed at President Donald Trump and his allies.

Daniel Wiesenfeld, a former Brooklyn prosecutor now on paid administrative leave from James’s office, met for hours with criminal and civil attorneys from the FBI and the Justice Department, according to sources cited by the New York Post.

The meeting lasted “several hours,” a length that suggests investigators were not treating the complaint as a routine personnel spat.

Wiesenfeld’s allegations first surfaced in a since-deleted email to colleagues. He said Investor Protection Bureau Chief Shamiso Maswoswe instructed him “to find and pursue crimes” by Trump allies — targeting first, justifying later.

His comparison was designed to sting Democrats who spent years accusing Trump of weaponizing justice. “If you believe Trump is using the Department of Justice attorneys to prosecute his enemies to further his political interests, you should find it equally troubling that Tish [James] is doing exactly the same thing.”

He then made the ask. “I ask you that you not serve as Tish’s personal attorneys by targeting her political enemies,” the email said. “Instead, I hope you choose to prosecute crimes and find the individuals accountable, rather than targeting individuals and then finding crimes.”

James’s office called it “a personnel matter” and said it is “committed to upholding New York’s laws and protecting the rights and freedoms of all New Yorkers, regardless of political beliefs.” It “strongly reject[ed] any assertion to the contrary.”

The White House did not wait. “This is more proof of the weaponization of the justice system by Letitia James to target President Trump and her political opponents,” spokeswoman Lauren Bis said. “The far-left Democrats’ lawfare against President Trump, his family must stop.”

The history is not subtle. James campaigned in 2018 on a vow to “prosecute the president for crimes committed in New York State.” She later won a civil fraud case against Trump, his sons, and the Trump Organization — a penalty fight that outlived the original dollar figure.

Maswoswe, the supervisor named in the email, was fired from the Justice Department during Trump’s first term, sued, and later settled for $795,000 under the Biden administration after joining James’s office.

No charges have been announced. A whistleblower in a room with the FBI is still not a verdict. For an attorney general who built a brand on chasing Trump, it is a different kind of deposition — one she does not control.
