Unearthed Marriage Certificate Sparks Firestorm in Ilhan Omar Scandal

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is facing renewed scrutiny over her marital history after a British marriage certificate surfaced containing family information that has raised additional questions about longstanding allegations involving her former husband. The development comes as federal authorities investigate aspects of the Minnesota congresswoman’s immigration history.
According to the New York Post, a marriage certificate issued in Britain in 1997 identifies the father of Leila Nur Said, a woman believed to be Omar’s sister, as Nur Said Elmi. That name reportedly matches one previously used by Omar’s late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, drawing attention to possible connections between family members.
The controversy centers on Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen whom Omar married in 2009. Critics have long alleged that Elmi was actually her brother and that the marriage was arranged to obtain immigration benefits. Omar has consistently denied those accusations, which remain unproven.
Several individuals familiar with the family reportedly told the New York Post that they believe the man identified on the British certificate was Omar’s father. However, the document does not independently establish that Omar and Elmi are siblings or demonstrate that their marriage was fraudulent.
The latest revelations follow an interview in which Omar addressed the allegations during a conversation with MS NOW host Chris Hayes. Asked directly whether she was related to her former husband, the congresswoman responded, “Not to my knowledge.”
Her four-word response quickly attracted attention, bringing renewed focus to questions surrounding her family relationships and the circumstances of her previous marriage.
Omar arrived in the United States as a Somali refugee in 1995. She later became an American citizen and eventually won election to Congress, becoming one of the country’s most prominent progressive lawmakers.

Questions about her marital history have persisted for years, particularly concerning the timeline of her relationships with Elmi and Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi, her longtime partner and the father of her three children.
According to previously reported records, Omar and Elmi provided a Minneapolis-area address on their marriage application that had also been associated with Hirsi.
Omar previously explained that she began a relationship with Hirsi in 2002, although their original marriage application was never completed. She said the couple separated in 2008.
She subsequently married Elmi in 2009 but has maintained that their relationship ended in 2011, despite their legal marriage continuing for several additional years.
Omar reconciled with Hirsi around 2012 and gave birth to their third child that year, while she remained legally married to Elmi.
Additional scrutiny followed reports that Omar and Hirsi filed joint tax returns in 2014 and 2015, despite her marriage to Elmi remaining legally intact. Those filings were later corrected.
Omar finalized her divorce from Elmi in 2017 and legally married Hirsi in January 2018. The couple subsequently divorced.
Another reported development involved Elmi withdrawing a marriage-based green card application in 2019 after immigration authorities requested additional documentation. The circumstances surrounding that withdrawal have also attracted attention.
In 2020, a Minneapolis Somali blogger alleged that Omar had previously introduced Elmi to members of the local community as her brother. “No one knew there had been a wedding [to Elmi] until the media turned up the marriage certificate years later,” the blogger claimed. The allegation has not been independently substantiated.
Federal agents searched Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence on October 12 as part of an ongoing criminal investigation. In a subsequent court filing, prosecutors reportedly identified the congresswoman as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar” while seeking to prevent the search warrant from being publicly disclosed. The use of an alternative name in court documents does not, by itself, indicate criminal conduct.
Despite the renewed attention surrounding the marriage certificate, conflicting relationship timelines and federal investigation, no publicly disclosed evidence has conclusively established that Omar married her brother or committed immigration fraud. The congresswoman continues to reject the allegations, and whether investigators will uncover evidence supporting them remains uncertain.
