Trump Suggests New Name for Strait of Hormuz

President Donald Trump used a Truth Social post to float another geographic rebrand, this time for one of the most sensitive waterways on earth: the Strait of Hormuz.

He suggested that, with the United States asserting control in the fight with Iran, the strait could become the “Trump Strait.” “Like America, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before!” he wrote.

The proposal is theatrical. The waterway is not. It links the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and carries a huge share of the world’s oil traffic. Iran has targeted vessels in and around the passage; U.S. forces have moved to protect commercial shipping and squeeze Iranian maritime operations.

Trump has repeatedly said American forces control the strait. Tehran rejects that claim even as it faces military and economic pressure.

The naming trial balloon fits a pattern. Last week he signed an order directing the federal government to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America” amid a trade fight with Canada. Google later said “Lake America” would appear on maps for U.S. users.

That followed his earlier directive to call the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” in U.S. government materials, complete with a “Gulf of America Day.”

Whether “Trump Strait” ever shows up on a federal chart is a separate question from the message he is sending Tehran: he wants the name, the traffic, and the leverage treated as American facts.

Energy markets will watch the waterway either way. The president just made sure the caption on the map is part of the argument.
