The iconic Double Arch at Lake Powell in Arizona collapsed into the lake on August 8, just hours after a video captured the moments leading up to its failure.
Known by various names such as the “Toilet Bowl” and “Crescent Pool,” the arch nearly fell on a group of swimmers who were present when rocks began to dislodge.
Witnesses reported a significant splash as a large piece of rock fell, and chaos ensued as people shouted warnings to those nearby.

“I looked over, and a couple of the guys I was with had seen a big piece of rock fall off the bottom of the arch into the lake,” Utah boater Merril Campbell said.
According to the National Parks Service, the arch had been deteriorating due to weathering, erosion, and changing water levels.
The loss of this unique geological feature is expected to impact visitors for many years to come.
