Trump Announces His VP Pick Today — Here’s Who’s In the Running

Donald Trump is set to reveal his Republican running mate at the Republican party convention in Milwaukee, with three top contenders being JD Vance, Doug Burgum, and Marco Rubio.

Other potential candidates could also emerge as surprise choices. Here’s a closer look at who’s in the running:

🚨 POLL: Should Trump pick JD Vance for VP?
YES 👍 or NO 👎

JD Vance: 39-year-old JD Vance, the junior Ohio senator known for his support of Trump and bestselling book “Hillbilly Elegy,” has received Trump’s endorsement and champions similar issues as Trump’s base. Despite preferring to serve in the Senate for a Trump administration, Vance has not ruled out the vice presidency, expressing his willingness to assist Trump. Rumors about Vance’s beard potentially disqualifying him as VP have been dismissed by Trump.

Doug Burgum: Doug Burgum, the second-term governor of North Dakota, previously a presidential candidate, has endorsed Trump despite prior negative comments about doing business with him. Known for his social conservatism and fiscal prudence, Burgum, a billionaire from his entrepreneurial pursuits, has impressed Trump with his calm demeanor and political acumen, similar to Mike Pence’s traits. Trump highlighted North Dakota’s strict abortion ban, an area of potential contention despite Burgum’s stance on leaving abortion laws to states. The abortion issue was significant in driving Democratic voter turnout in the 2022 midterms.

Marco Rubio: In the 2016 Republican primary race, Trump and Marco Rubio had a contentious relationship, with Trump mocking Rubio’s stature and Rubio commenting on Trump’s hands. Despite their past feud, Rubio has supported Trump in the current primary season, potentially aiding Trump in attracting Latino votes with his background. However, a potential issue arises due to both residing in Florida, which could affect the allocation of the state’s electoral votes, but this could be resolved by a decisive Republican victory or one candidate relocating. Trump acknowledges the complexity but does not rule out considering Rubio as a running mate.

Tim Scott: Tim Scott, the notable black Republican senator from South Carolina who competed against Trump in the party’s primary but later endorsed him, is considered a strong contender for the vice-presidential role. Despite a campaign that failed to gain traction due to fundraising challenges and uninspiring debate performances, Scott’s support for Trump has boosted his standing. Trump has praised Scott’s advocacy for him, implying his effectiveness as a politician.

Byron Donalds: Byron Donalds, a prominent figure in black conservatism, has risen through the ranks from local politics in Florida to the US House, representing the right wing of his party. Trump openly praised Donalds as a potential vice-presidential candidate at a campaign event in Michigan, sparking speculation. While Donalds remained discreet about discussions with Trump regarding the VP position, he expressed confidence in Trump’s decision-making. However, recent reports suggest that Donalds’ chances have diminished as Trump’s vice-presidential shortlist narrows.

🚨 POLL: Should Trump pick Byron Donalds for VP?
