Secret Service agents fatally shot 21-year-old Nasire Best of Maryland after he opened fire at a White House security checkpoint on Saturday evening near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW.
Best had a documented history of encounters with the Secret Service, including prior arrests at the White House complex, claims of being Jesus Christ, and involuntary mental health commitment.
He allegedly pulled a revolver from a bag and began shooting. No Secret Service agents were injured, but a bystander was wounded.
President Trump, who was inside the White House at the time, praised the Secret Service’s “swift and professional action” and renewed calls for enhanced presidential security.
The FBI and ATF are assisting in the investigation.
