Disney’s “The Mandalorian & Grogu” opened to a disappointing $81.9 million domestically over its three-day Memorial Day weekend, according to early box office results.
The figure falls below 2018’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story”, which opened to $84.4 million (roughly $112 million inflation-adjusted) — a film widely considered a major flop that killed planned spin-offs.
International opening also lagged at $63 million.
With a production budget around $166 million plus heavy marketing costs, the film faces an uphill battle to break even.
The soft debut adds to growing concerns about the future of the Star Wars franchise following a string of underperforming films and shows.
