‘Saved by the Bell’ Star Dead at 75

Some critics also objected to the gambling component. The argument was that the advertisement combined two controversial marketing strategies—sexualized imagery and sports betting—in an effort to attract predominantly male customers. An opinion piece in The Guardian characterized the campaign as part of a broader commercial environment in which women's bodies are still used to sell products connected with men's sports consumption.
There was significant disagreement even among commentators who might ordinarily be described as left-of-center. Guardian columnist Marina Hyde, for example, defended Sweeney from what she saw as disproportionate outrage, arguing that neither the Novig campaign nor the earlier American Eagle advertisement justified the level of anger directed personally at the actress.

That disagreement illustrates why the story cannot neatly be reduced to “liberals versus Sydney Sweeney.” Some progressive commentators have criticized her advertisements, while others have criticized the people attacking her. Likewise, some feminists view the sexualized campaigns as regressive, while others emphasize Sweeney's agency as an adult woman making her own commercial choices.
What has changed most dramatically is Sweeney's symbolic role. She began as an actress who occasionally generated controversy because of “Euphoria” and her sex-symbol status. Over several years, political commentators increasingly transformed her into a proxy for arguments about conventional beauty, feminism, DEI, race, sexuality and the supposed rise or decline of “wokeness.”

The fallout has therefore been unusual: the controversies have increased scrutiny of Sweeney without seriously diminishing her commercial visibility. American Eagle received enormous publicity from the 2025 campaign, while the comparatively obscure Novig received international coverage after the 2026 advertisement. Critics may view that as evidence that outrage-based marketing rewards provocation; defenders may see the backlash as proof that online political discourse routinely overinterprets celebrity advertising. The documented record supports one conclusion more clearly than either ideological narrative: Sweeney has become a recurring canvas onto which competing cultural groups project much larger disputes than anything she has personally said.
Sydney Sweeney was born in Spokane, Washington, and grew up in the Pacific Northwest far from the traditional centers of the entertainment industry.
