NYPD Deals Crushing Blow to Mamdani as Wife Travels Overseas

New York City’s police department has publicly rejected any plan to dispatch officers to accompany Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s wife on a personal family trip to Syria and Lebanon.

City Hall had claimed the NYPD recommended that Rama Duwaji’s security detail travel with her in September. The department quickly contradicted that assertion. An NYPD spokesperson stated flatly: “The NYPD does not send officers to countries with level 4 travel advisories for discretionary reasons such as personal travel.”

Both Syria and Lebanon carry State Department “Do Not Travel” warnings due to terrorism risks. When questioned by local media, Mamdani blamed the conflicting accounts on a staff “miscommunication.”

Scott Munro, president of the NYPD Detectives’ Endowment Association, made the department’s position clear. “Our detectives put themselves in harm’s way every day protecting New Yorkers. The DEA would never remain silent if our members were asked to travel to a dangerous, off-limits foreign country for anything other than a legitimate law-enforcement or intelligence operation.”

Munro added: “Our detectives are needed here in New York City protecting residents and fighting crime.”

The episode carries extra political weight because of Mamdani’s own past statements. In 2020 he posted that the NYPD was “racist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety” and called to “Defund it. Dismantle it.” He also wrote, “Queer liberation means defund the police.”

Now serving as mayor, Mamdani sought the very department he once sought to dismantle to provide overseas protection for a personal trip. The department’s refusal underscores the difference between political rhetoric and operational reality.

Residents and rank-and-file officers are left watching a mayor who once demanded the NYPD’s defunding now attempt to use its resources for family travel to high-risk nations.

The episode has highlighted ongoing tensions between City Hall and the police force tasked with keeping New Yorkers safe.
