Woman Charged with Defacing WWII Memorial Reveals Why She Did It

A Kentucky woman now facing two federal felonies says she spray-painted the World War II Memorial and poured soap in its fountain because she wanted the country to look at her.

Melissa L. Farris, 41, of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, was indicted by a D.C. grand jury on one count of destruction of a veterans’ memorial and one count of destruction of government property. Each count carries a maximum of 10 years. She is scheduled to appear September 3 before U.S. District Judge Trevor N. McFadden.

The incident was August 13. Park Police and rangers responded around 2 p.m. after a witness reported a woman spray-painting the Atlantic Theatre Pavilion. A ranger found foam in the fountain and saw the woman recording herself before she fled.

Graffiti included the phrase “Clean Hands Dirty $.” Soap went into the monument’s fountains. Cleanup took several hours and cost more than $1,000.

Prosecutors say Farris livestreamed the act. In one video cited in the complaint, she said, “I am cognitively aware and executively (sic) of the choices I am making and I am doing so to push my whistleblower case into the courtroom . . . someone has to make choices that are different and I am accountable for my actions.”

In a follow-up clip she added, “I was just allowed to deface Federal f***ing property, and nobody batted an eye, and that is very strange.”

Farris later told The Washington Post she had been laid off in 2024 from an electrical-union job on an EV battery plant in Glendale, Kentucky, and never received about $6,000 in healthcare funds she claimed were owed. “I was robbed, and so were my friends,” she said. “I’m just trying to do the right thing.”

She framed the vandalism as protest, not tribute-smashing. “Veterans fought for people, not monuments or memorials, and I honor veterans by trying to keep our liberties and life and happiness here,” she said. “One thing everybody can agree on is everybody loves to hate on something. So, I made a big mess to get the nation’s attention.”

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro took the opposite view. “The World War II Memorial stands as a lasting tribute to the courage of 16 million Americans who served during World War II and the ultimate sacrifice of the 405,399 who gave their lives defending our nation and the freedoms we hold dear. Defacing it is an affront to their service and sacrifice.”

President Trump had already posted after the attack: “Our beautiful World War II Memorial was just hit by Spray Painting Vandals. THERE CAN BE NO GREATER INSULT TO THOSE AMERICAN HEROES IN WORLD WAR II.”

Farris turned herself in August 14. A magistrate released her August 17 on conditions that included living with family in Ohio, surrendering her passport, and undergoing a mental-health evaluation. She now says she was “extremely naïve” about Washington. The indictment still stands.
