Dem Rep. Comes Unglued Over ‘Extremely Racist’ Trump Admin

Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.) told MS NOW’s “The Weeknight” that President Trump’s administration “is extremely racist,” tying her own federal case to a broader claim about how Black women are treated.

McIver is fighting charges from a May 9, 2025, confrontation outside the Delaney Hall ICE facility in Newark. A Third Circuit panel ruled 2-1 this week that two of three counts can move forward, finding the Speech or Debate Clause does not cover the alleged physical contact with federal officers.

On air, she described the justice system as stacked. “The criminal justice system has always been unfair. And now I am living firsthand experience of it being unfair,” she said. “I honestly feel like the weight of the world’s unfairness is on my shoulder.”

Co-host Eugene Daniels asked why she thought she was carrying that burden. McIver answered with identity and targeting. “The same reason why black women have always been in the gaps of many trials and tribulations in this country. I’m a young black woman from the city of Newark and I think that they thought that they can break me, that I would be an easy target.”

She said the pattern was larger than one case. “And it’s the same way that this administration has been going after many black women on different fronts. And, you know, it just happened to be me.”

Then came the line the clip is built around. “I think that this administration, who is extremely racist, and definitely bigots and in many different fronts. Why not me? Right in their eyes.”

McIver said agents reacted to her showing up at Delaney Hall. “They saw a black woman that day show up to Delaney Hall, to express power that the people have given me to represent them. And they didn’t like that. That made them very upset. And that’s why they’re doing what they’re doing.”

The court majority called the charged acts — including slamming a forearm into one officer and striking another while pushing past him — “unambiguously non-legislative.” Count Three was sent back for more review. McIver has pleaded not guilty. The television appearance put a racial charge on a case the judges treated as a question of fists, not floor speeches.
