As press secretary, she regularly stood behind the White House podium and answered questions from the national press corps. She was responsible for communicating the administration’s positions on major domestic and foreign policy issues. Leavitt also became known as an aggressive and unwavering defender of Trump’s agenda.
Her appearances frequently placed her directly opposite reporters challenging the administration’s policies and decisions. The White House role gave Leavitt firsthand experience with the daily operations and political strategy of a presidential administration. It also significantly expanded her national profile after years spent working primarily in political communications. Leavitt remained White House press secretary until August 2026. She described leaving the administration as a "bittersweet decision." Leavitt said the demands of the job had become difficult to balance with being the mother she wanted to be to her two young children.
