‘Insanity’: Democrat Rep. Melts Down on Live TV Over Trump’s Tariffs

Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) went on MS NOW’s “The Last Word” Friday and branded President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada “insanity,” tying the policy to grocery lines, gas pumps, and medicine costs back home.

Dingell said she had been in her district for more than a month and that people were approaching her everywhere. “I’ve been home for more than a month, Jonathan, and people are hurting. Every place that I go,” she said.

She described regular stops at the farmers market, Kroger on weekend mornings, and gas stations. “People just come up to talk to me and tell me how they’re struggling,” she said.

The examples she offered were personal and specific: “The single mother who can’t afford her child’s inhaler. People that I know that are working two or three jobs to be able to meet all of their expenses, or at the gas station and saying, I can’t afford to buy gas to get to work.”

Dingell insisted those stories were not abstractions. “These are not just numbers you and I are talking about and people are talking about, these are real lives. They are hurting. And affordability is real for too many working men and women in this country.”

Then she turned to the tariffs themselves. “I think these tariffs — I’m one of the people that call this insanity and I admit it,” she said.

Her argument rested on geography and alliance, not just prices. “You know, first of all Canada is our neighbor. We have a partnership, our economic security, and our national security are intertwined.”

The clip was short. Dingell did not lay out an alternative trade program. She put a label on the Canada tariffs, then used district anecdotes to argue that working families are already paying the bill.
