Ayanna Pressley: ‘The Confederacy Is Still Alive and Well — That’s All MAGA Is’

Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) told a Boston crowd that Donald Trump’s movement is the Confederacy under another name.

She spoke Monday at Roxbury Community College while campaigning for Sen. Ed Markey in his primary against Rep. Seth Moulton.

“It is bigger than Trump,” Pressley said. “Because whenever we do the work of ousting the occupant of the Oval Office, the Confederacy is still alive and well. That’s all MAGA is.”

She did not stop at the historical comparison. “White supremacy is still alive and well,” she said. “Anti-blackness will still be alive and well.”

Pressley endorsed Markey in March after weighing a Senate run of her own. She has cited immigration and criminal-justice work with Markey as the reason.

The line treats MAGA as a racial project that would outlast a Trump defeat. It also tells Democratic primary voters in Massachusetts that beating one president is not the end of the fight she is describing.
