Disturbing New Footage of Mitch McConnell Stuns Everyone

Sen. Mitch McConnell drew attention during a Senate Agriculture Committee meeting after video showed fellow lawmakers speaking to him as he prepared to cast a key vote on the Farm Bill.

The Kentucky Republican participated a committee vote as lawmakers considered advancing the sweeping agriculture legislation.

The measure ultimately cleared the committee in a 12-11 party-line vote, with McConnell providing Republicans with the support needed to move the bill forward.

Video from the hearing showed the clerk calling McConnell’s name during the roll call. McConnell, who was seated in a wheelchair beside Sen. John Hoeven of North Dakota, appeared to begin raising a finger.

Hoeven then leaned toward McConnell and could be heard saying “no.”

McConnell quietly responded “aye,” but the clerk apparently did not hear his response. Hoeven again said “no” as others near McConnell became involved in the exchange.

When the clerk called McConnell’s name again, the senator responded more audibly with “aye” while slightly raising his finger.

Hoeven’s office later said the moment resulted from confusion about the specific question before the committee.

“Senator Hoeven initially thought the vote was to overrule the chair, then realized the vote was on final passage. At that point, Senator McConnell had already indicated his aye vote on passage of the farm bill,” communications director Kami Capener said.

McConnell’s office subsequently pointed to a statement from the senator emphasizing his support for the legislation.

“As a member of the Agriculture Committee since my first day in the United States Senate, I was proud to vote yes on the Farm Bill on behalf of the hardworking farm families across Kentucky,” McConnell said.

The 84-year-old senator had recently returned to Capitol Hill following an absence of more than three months. He was hospitalized after falling at his Washington home in June and later developed pneumonia before undergoing rehabilitation.

McConnell said upon returning to Washington that lingering effects from childhood polio had made his recovery more difficult.

He acknowledged that he was “still not quite back to 100 percent,” adding that he planned to participate in important votes while continuing physical therapy.

McConnell has used a wheelchair since returning to the Capitol. His appearance at the Agriculture Committee meeting marked one of his first public appearances following his lengthy absence.

Despite the confusion captured on video, McConnell ultimately recorded an “aye” vote and helped advance the Farm Bill out of committee.
