‘Bloodbath Coming’: CNN Staffers in Panic Mode as Paramount Proceeds in Musk-Linked Deal

CNN employees are reportedly bracing for major changes as Paramount moves closer to taking control of Warner Bros. Discovery and its cable news network. The massive media deal would put CNN under the same corporate umbrella as CBS News while combining Warner Bros., HBO, Paramount Pictures and several major streaming platforms.
Inside CNN, however, reports indicate that the approaching takeover has created significant uncertainty about jobs, management and the network’s future direction. “People are very nervous,” one CNN staffer reportedly said.

The employee compared the atmosphere to watching a hurricane approach while knowing there is little that can be done before it arrives.
“It’s dark. It’s like when you do hurricane coverage. You see the storm spinning off the coast of Haiti and moving towards Florida and you’re just waiting and you’re like, ‘Oh, s***.’”
Another television executive offered an even more dramatic prediction about what could follow the merger.
“Bloodbath coming, including at CNN,” the executive said. “That’s the next big step — slashing and burning.” Much of the concern is tied to Paramount’s expected effort to find billions of dollars in savings after completing the enormous transaction. Paramount has projected approximately $6 billion in cost savings from combining the companies, increasing speculation that overlapping jobs and operations could eventually be eliminated. Paramount CEO David Ellison is expected to oversee the enlarged media company once the transaction is completed.
The involvement of his father, Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison, has also drawn attention because the elder Ellison is providing substantial financial backing for the Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition. Questions surrounding CNN have gone beyond potential layoffs.
Some employees and outside critics have raised concerns about whether the network’s editorial direction could eventually change under its new ownership.
Paramount has pushed back against suggestions that CNN would lose its journalistic independence.
As part of the agreement that helped clear legal challenges to the acquisition, Paramount agreed to establish an editorial independence board covering CNN and CBS News.
That board is intended to help protect independent and fact-based journalism at the two networks, although critics have questioned how much actual authority it will possess.
Another wrinkle emerged when Elon Musk’s name surfaced in discussions surrounding the financing of the new media empire.
Paramount executives have reportedly considered asking Musk to participate in a group of investors that could provide additional equity to the company as it absorbs Warner Bros. Discovery.
There is currently no indication that Musk has agreed to invest, and there is no evidence that he has been offered a management or editorial role at CNN.
His potential involvement nevertheless attracted attention because of his longstanding relationship with Larry Ellison.
Ellison has described Musk as a friend and previously served on Tesla’s board of directors.
When Musk assembled financing for his $44 billion purchase of Twitter, now X, Ellison provided a $1 billion equity commitment through his trust.
The two billionaires have also maintained business ties across the technology industry, strengthening perceptions that Musk could be a natural person for the Ellison family to approach as Paramount searches for additional investors.
That relationship helps explain why even preliminary reports involving Musk have generated attention around the CNN deal.
Musk has become an outspoken critic of traditional media organizations, while his ownership of X has made his influence over the broader information ecosystem a recurring subject of political debate.
An equity investment in Paramount could theoretically give Musk a financial stake in a company controlling both CNN and CBS News.
But an investment alone would not mean Musk would control either newsroom, and reports about the discussions have not established that Musk would have any formal influence over editorial decisions.
For CNN employees, Musk represents only one of several unanswered questions surrounding an unusually large corporate transition.
The more immediate concern remains what Paramount will do after taking control — particularly as executives attempt to deliver billions of dollars in promised savings while integrating two enormous media companies.
With the merger approaching completion, CNN employees may soon begin getting answers about layoffs, leadership and the network’s direction under its new owners.
