Bombshell Docs Shows Jack Smith Collected Nearly 5,000 Trump Supporters’ Info

Former special counsel Jack Smith acknowledged that investigators obtained financial information as part of the federal investigation into President Donald Trump and efforts surrounding the 2020 election. The admission came during a contentious Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in which Chairman Chuck Grassley questioned Smith about newly disclosed records involving thousands of political donors.

According to records released by Grassley’s committee, investigators obtained at least 4,782 checks connected to donors from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Some of the donations were reportedly as small as $1. The committee said the checks covered contributions made between September 2019 and August 2023 and were collected as part of the investigation known as Arctic Frost.

Grassley pressed Smith directly about whether his office had obtained donor information that included financial records. “Did you obtain possession of donor data, to include financial information, yes or no?” Grassley asked.

Smith initially responded by explaining the broader purpose of the investigation. “Our investigation was focused on investigating matters under my mandate including whether any person or entity violated the law with attempts to block the peaceful transfers of power,” Smith said.

Grassley repeated his question, asking Smith again whether his operation had obtained donor information containing financial details. “Yes, we acquired financial information,” Smith replied.

Smith said he could not recall every subpoena issued during the investigation but defended the investigative decisions made by his team.

“It was to conduct a criminal investigation into one of the most serious crimes in our nation’s history,” Smith said. “I had a duty to collect facts.”

Grassley argued that the records raised significant privacy concerns because copies of personal checks can contain information including names, addresses, bank routing numbers, account information and signatures. The committee said redacted versions of the 4,782 checks had been provided through whistleblower disclosures.

“The list includes checks from constituents in every state of every single member of this committee, both Republicans and Democrats,” Grassley said.

“Every member on this committee ought to be outraged for what happened to their constituents,” he continued. “Which one of my Democratic colleagues will join me in that outrage?”

Grassley also questioned why the collection of donor information was not described in Smith’s public report, arguing that the scope of the records demonstrated that investigators reached well beyond Trump and his closest political advisers.

The disclosure comes amid a broader congressional examination of Arctic Frost. Senate Judiciary Committee records released previously showed that investigators also sought telephone toll records associated with current or former Republican members of Congress.

Additional material released Tuesday by Grassley’s committee alleged that communications involving journalists at numerous national news organizations were also obtained during the investigation.

Smith has repeatedly defended his work, maintaining that subpoenas and other investigative tools were used to determine whether federal crimes occurred in connection with attempts to overturn the 2020 election results and delay the transfer of presidential power.

Republicans at Tuesday’s hearing accused Smith and his team of overstepping their authority, while Democratic senators defended the investigation and challenged Republican descriptions of Smith’s conduct. The hearing reflected the continuing partisan dispute over both the Trump investigations and the tactics federal prosecutors used to conduct them.

The Judiciary Committee’s examination of Arctic Frost remains ongoing as lawmakers continue reviewing internal records and questioning the scope of the investigation.
