Trump Hints at Fox News Star For Press Secretary

President Donald Trump raised the possibility of Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy becoming the next White House press secretary during an exchange with reporters. Trump made the comment while discussing the search for a permanent replacement for former press secretary Karoline Leavitt. Asked what qualities he wanted in the next person behind the White House briefing room podium, Trump suggested there was no shortage of interest.
“A lot of people want that job,” Trump said. “I would say many of them are right here.” Trump then gestured toward members of the press and joked that one of the reporters might want the position.
President Trump jokes that Fox News’ Peter Doocy will be the next press secretary — then notes he makes too much money at Fox to leave.

“You’d like that job,” he said. Moments later, Trump specifically mentioned Doocy.
“Maybe a guy like Peter,” Trump said. The president immediately joked that Fox News may have made it difficult to recruit the veteran correspondent.
“But he’s making too much. He’s gone. I lost him as soon as he renegotiated his last contract.” Trump’s remarks appeared to be made in jest, and there has been no indication that Doocy has received a formal offer to join the administration.
Doocy currently serves as Fox News’ senior White House correspondent and is also a rotating anchor of “The Sunday Briefing.” He has worked for Fox News since 2009. The press secretary position has been open since Leavitt left the administration at the end of August.
Leavitt completed her final day as White House press secretary on Aug. 27, 2026, after becoming the youngest person ever to hold the position. Trump praised Leavitt while announcing her departure, describing her as one of his most trusted aides and saying he respected her decision to spend more time with her family.
“Our wonderful White House Press Secretary, and one of my most trusted aides, Karoline Leavitt, will be departing her role at the end of the month so she can spend more time with her beautiful young children and family, a decision I totally understand and respect!” Trump said.
He also indicated that Leavitt would remain involved with his political operation outside the White House. “Karoline will now be one of my top outside advisors, and an influential voice within the Republican Party,” Trump said.
Leavitt previously described her time serving as press secretary as “the honor and adventure of a lifetime.”
She said the demands of the position became increasingly difficult to balance after welcoming her second child.
“Being a mother and welcoming a new baby while working in one of the most demanding jobs in the world has been the most rewarding yet challenging season of my life, to say the least,” Leavitt said.
She added that she ultimately concluded she could not devote the necessary attention to both her family and the demanding White House position.
“The truth is, since returning to the White House after the birth of my daughter, I have felt in my heart that I cannot be the best mom my two young children deserve while devoting the constant time, energy, and attention required of the White House Press Secretary.”
“And that is why I have ultimately made the bittersweet decision to depart the White House and embark on a new chapter in my life,” she said.
Trump has not yet publicly announced a permanent successor. His mention of Doocy adds another prominent media figure to the ongoing discussion surrounding the position, although the president’s comments gave no indication that the Fox News reporter is formally under consideration.
For now, Doocy remains at Fox News, where he continues covering Trump and the administration from the White House.
