Bush Daughter Donates to Texas Democrat James Talarico

A member of one of America’s most prominent Republican political families has made a financial contribution supporting a Democratic Senate candidate in Texas, drawing attention to divisions within the GOP as the party fights to maintain control of Congress.

Barbara Bush, daughter of former President George W. Bush, donated $2,500 to Lone Star Rising PAC, an outside political organization supporting Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico. The contribution was disclosed in Federal Election Commission records reviewed by Fox News Digital.

The donation places a member of the Bush family among financial supporters of Talarico, who is challenging Republican Ken Paxton in a closely watched Texas Senate contest. The race carries national significance as Republicans seek to preserve their Senate majority in the upcoming midterm elections.

Bush’s contribution is particularly notable given her family’s longstanding association with Republican politics. Her father served two terms as president, while her grandfather, George H.W. Bush, previously occupied the White House.

The donation also comes as Talarico campaigns against the influence of wealthy donors and powerful corporations in American elections.

Talarico has criticized Paxton and Republican Sen. John Cornyn, accusing them of “want[ing] corporations and billionaires to decide our elections, not Texans.”

Despite that criticism, the Democratic candidate has defended accepting assistance from outside political organizations.

According to The Texas Tribune, Talarico has argued that he will not “unilaterally disarm” while Republicans continue benefiting from political action committees and other outside spending.

Lone Star Rising PAC has emerged as a major financial force supporting Talarico’s campaign, accounting for nearly all independent expenditures benefiting his candidacy, according to Houston Public Media.

The organization has attracted several prominent contributors, including Don Henley of the Eagles, who reportedly donated $150,000.

Although Bush’s $2,500 contribution is considerably smaller, her decision to support the organization has attracted attention because of her family’s Republican legacy.

Texas campaign finance expert Andrew Cates emphasized that Bush made the contribution through an organization required to publicly disclose its financial supporters.

“She didn’t give it to a 501(c)(4), in which her contribution would’ve been completely anonymous. She gave it to a PAC that reports all the money in and out,” Cates told Houston Public Media.

The contribution also arrives amid a complicated political relationship between the Bush family and President Donald Trump.

Tensions between Trump and members of the Bush family became public during the 2016 presidential campaign, when Trump repeatedly criticized former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and other members of the political dynasty.

Barbara Bush, the twin sister of NBC television personality Jenna Bush Hager, shares her name with her late grandmother, former first lady Barbara Bush. Campaign finance records list an address for her in Brooklyn, New York.

Outside politics, Bush serves as the NBA’s vice president of social impact and inclusion, overseeing initiatives involving community engagement and humanitarian programs. The George W. Bush Presidential Center describes her international work as using the “convening power of basketball” to advance initiatives involving social justice, “health equity” and sustainability.

Bush also co-founded Global Health Corps, an organization focused on developing young leaders in global health, and has collaborated with her sister on several children’s books. Her political contribution underscores how individual members of prominent Republican families can support candidates outside their family’s traditional party affiliation.
