Ex-Democratic Congressional Candidate Arrested Over Alleged Threats to Kill Others

A former Democratic congressional candidate in Florida has been arrested on allegations that he threatened to kill or injure individuals during a political dispute. Elijah Manley, 27, who recently sought a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, faces two criminal counts involving written threats.

Manley was taken into custody in Broward County after investigators examined social media messages allegedly directed at two individuals. Court records show that his bond was set at $40,000, and a judge imposed restrictions on his activities while the criminal case proceeds.

The former candidate competed in Florida’s 20th Congressional District Democratic primary in August 2026, challenging incumbent Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz. He finished third in the race, ending his latest effort to secure federal office.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by local news outlets, the investigation began after authorities received reports of threatening Facebook posts in August. Investigators identified an account they believed belonged to Manley and reviewed screenshots provided by individuals concerned about the messages.

The alleged threats reportedly followed disagreements involving support for Democratic state Rep. Angie Nixon, who was seeking a state Senate seat. Investigators said several posts appeared to target individuals who opposed the candidate.

One message allegedly warned Democrats who refused to support the party’s Senate nominee that they would face violent consequences. Other comments included statements about retaliating against political opponents.

Authorities reported that the messages were posted on August 20, shortly after the Democratic primary. The Broward Sheriff’s Office received information about the alleged threats the following day.

At least two individuals expressed concerns about their personal safety. One reported being frightened by the comments, according to investigators.

Manley reportedly told authorities that his statements were not intended as genuine threats. He characterized the exchange as a political disagreement rather than an expression of intent to harm anyone.

The arrest has also resulted in an unusual development involving the Broward State Attorney’s Office, which announced that it would not prosecute the case because of potential conflicts of interest.

Spokesperson Paula McMahon explained that the “listed victims have participated in several charitable drives organized by the Broward State Attorney’s Office over the years.”

Because of those relationships, prosecutors requested that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis assign another state attorney’s office to oversee the proceedings.

The decision is intended to prevent questions about prosecutorial impartiality and ensure that the criminal allegations receive an independent review.

Meanwhile, Manley has been ordered not to possess firearms or ammunition, communicate with the alleged victims, or publish posts on social media while subject to his pretrial restrictions.

Local reports indicate that Manley was released from jail Saturday morning after posting bond. The original bond amount was $40,000.

Under Florida law, transmitting written threats to kill or cause bodily injury can constitute a felony offense, carrying significant criminal penalties if a defendant is convicted.

The controversy comes just months after Manley’s unsuccessful campaign against Wasserman Schultz, a longtime Democratic congresswoman who previously chaired the Democratic National Committee.

Manley has not been convicted of wrongdoing, and the allegations remain subject to judicial review. Further details about the case are expected to emerge as prosecutors examine the evidence and criminal proceedings continue.
