49ers Owner Faces Suspension After Arrest

San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York was suspended six games and fined $500,000 by the NFL for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

The NFL announced the penalty on Friday. York, 46, was arrested August 23 in East Palestine, Ohio, on misdemeanor charges. He was initially charged with engaging in prostitution. Prosecutors later changed that count to disorderly conduct. He was also charged with possessing criminal tools.

During the arrest a cellphone was returned to him and $160 was seized, to be donated to the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force under his plea agreement. He was released on a $5,000 bond, fined $1,150, and sentenced to one day in jail with credit for time served. He pleaded no contest to both misdemeanors and completed an online course.

The absence from San Francisco’s first three games counts toward the six-game ban. He can return after the Week 6 Monday night game against the Washington Commanders on October 19.

York said he accepts the decision in full. “To my family, to the players, coaches, and employees of the San Francisco 49ers, to our fans and partners, I am deeply sorry. This was an inexcusable mistake and I take full responsibility.”

He added that what he did “does not reflect my values or the man I strive to be for my family,” and that he fell short of the model he wants to set for his sons. “Your trust will have to be earned back over time, and I look forward to that work ahead.”

York has run the 49ers’ day-to-day operations since taking over from his parents in 2008 and became principal owner in 2024. Under him the team has made eight playoff trips, seven NFC Championship games and three Super Bowls.
