Ilhan Omar’s husband responds to rumors congresswoman fled the United States

Federal agents from Homeland Security Investigations searched Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence on Monday as part of a criminal investigation into her immigration paperwork.
Reports indicated that Omar’s cellphone and passport were seized during the search. The inquiry examines her path to citizenship, including her status as a Somali-born lawmaker who obtained citizenship through her father’s naturalization when she was reportedly 17.
Records show that Omar’s listed birth year was changed from 1981 to 1982 in the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library. The adjustment appeared during her time in the Minnesota House and continued into the early months of her congressional service. If the earlier birth year is accurate, she would have been 18 at the time of naturalization, which could affect the validity of automatic citizenship as a minor.
At least two of Omar’s relatives, including one identified as her sister Sahra Noor, received subpoenas in connection with the investigation. A separate review of Omar’s financial disclosures is underway in U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s office and is not tied to the raid.
Omar’s 2024 congressional disclosure listed business interests linked to her husband, Tim Mynett, with values between $6 million and $30 million. The filing was later amended. Mynett’s winery and venture capital advisory firm interests were adjusted to $0, down from prior ranges of $1-5 million and $5-25 million. Omar’s office said the original filing had incorrectly listed total business equity rather than Mynett’s ownership share and had not accounted for liabilities.
The raid followed the sentencing of a fraud ringleader connected to Omar to 41 years in prison, which increased public scrutiny of her finances. Omar has not appeared publicly since the search.
Rumors circulated that Omar had left the country after the raid. On Wednesday, Mynett was observed outside their D.C. home on multiple occasions: walking their Golden Labrador Retriever named Teddy, taking out the trash, and accompanying an Omar staffer.
When reporters asked about claims that Omar had fled, Mynett responded, “You guys are annoying the hell out of all the neighbors around here, man.”
Addressing the immigration investigation, he said, “My wife came here when she was 12 years old as a child war refugee. No concerns.” He added that he had no concerns about what investigators might find regarding Omar.
President Donald Trump commented on the financial disclosures and related questions in a Truth Social post. He wrote, “Why did Ilhan Omar report a Net Worth of up to 30 Million Dollars just a short time ago, and then immediately say, ‘Oh, I made a mistake! It’s really $100,000.’ Could it be that her highly paid accountant actually reported the money that was stolen from her fraudulent activities in Minnesota? Would something like that be possible? Do you think the accountant actually gave the right number the first time, 30 Million Dollars, and then she was forced to disavow because she never would have been able to report where that much money came from? She must have freaked out when she saw that money! Where did her house come from, where did her cars come from, and what about her lovely place in Washington, D.C.? I didn’t know that Congressmen and women made that kind of money, but I do know her husband, according to information and belief, makes almost nothing, so it couldn’t have come from him. How many people did she illegally bring into our Country from Somalia? America wants answers, and we want them, NOW!”
A congressional staffer for Omar was seen carrying two large Burger King bags into the residence, with security personnel escorting her and remaining outside afterward. Omar’s office has not issued a detailed public statement on the raid beyond earlier characterizations of related actions as an abuse of power.
The dual tracks of the immigration review and the financial disclosure examination continue, with no criminal charges publicly announced against Omar at this time. Mynett’s on-camera response has been the primary direct comment from the household since the search.
