U.S. Delegation Walks Out of U.N. Meeting After France Criticizes Trump Administration

A rare diplomatic confrontation unfolded Monday inside a United Nations Security Council meeting focused on Russia’s war in Ukraine. As France’s ambassador began to speak, the entire United States delegation stood and walked out of the chamber.

The walkout was not spontaneous. It followed public criticism from France’s mission in Geneva after a General Assembly vote on extending the term of U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk. The United States was among only ten nations that opposed the extension. France accused Washington of joining Russia and North Korea and claimed America was no longer the global standard on human rights.

Dan Negrea, an alternate U.S. representative, later explained the decision. “There is a member of this council that will feign moral outrage and pretend to lecture the rest of us,” he said, accusing France of “disingenuous grandstanding” and “politicized drivel.” He added that the United States would continue leaving the room during French remarks unless Paris abandoned its “condescending and disrespectful rhetoric.”

U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz had already accused France of supporting a human rights chief who unfairly targets democracies such as the United States and Israel while showing insufficient resolve toward repressive governments. The French ambassador proceeded with prepared remarks on Ukraine without directly addressing the protest.

Walkouts among permanent Security Council members are uncommon. The episode underscored a sharper tone from the Trump administration toward certain international institutions and highlighted growing friction with a traditional ally. Whether the tactic becomes a repeated practice remains an open question.
